Two more singles into the #FearOfMu21c project, crowdsourcing the greatest singles of the 21st century. Here’s an index post.

With all of the holdovers from #Uncool50 accounted for, these final 13 days are all new, and all brilliant.

Anyone I want to be - Roxie Węgiel

An absolute masterpiece of a song, and would have received the 7th bonus point if I wasn't limited to five.

Roxie Węgiel - billed as "Roksana Węgiel" on this release - was born in January 2005, and was a promising judoka. The history says she took up singing while doing karaoke at a judo camp. By 2018, she'd won The Voice of Holland of Poland Kids, and was picked for the European competition.

"Anyone I want to be" gets going with a throbbing chord, a solo vocal in English that turns into Polish for the pre-chorus. Visually, it's perfection - black-and-white video, fast and precise cuts, camera angles that are just right. We're hooked with the loping beat and fists-in-the-air moment, a little thrill of the chorus.

Backing dancers are a perpetual motion machine, Roxie cuts through them like a hot knife moving through superheated cocoa. The second verse is entirely in Polish, the second pre-chorus and chorus is entirely in Polish, but we know what she's singing.

Just when we were getting to grips with the song, there's a remarkable costume reveal. The dancers pull ribbons out from the back of Roxie's dress, made to move her like she was a marionette. Then the ribbons detach, and she is free. Even to the viewer who speaks no Polish, this is a clear explanation of the song's message.

And we're back into English for the last chorus. But no! The last chorus chops off half-way through! Darn you! Our expectation is denied, the moment of catharsis we want and expect is not going to happen! The only way to get resolution is to play the song again, in the winner's reprise.

Almost inevitably, the winner of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018. Would surely have given "Toy" and "Fuego" a run in the senior contest. Why did this song win? It's a stunningly good song, polished and buffed through the adult pop market. Iggy Azalea turned it down. Rita Ora turned it down. Their loss.

The basic song was written by Maegan Cottone, Nathan Duvall from Disciples, Cutfather, Peter Wallevik, and Daniel Davidsen; additional lyric in Polish by Małgorzata Uściłowska and Patryk Kumór. It takes seven lyricists to get pop perfection.

TVP, the broadcaster in Poland, followed the same formula to the letter in 2019's contest, and again won; they've been eclipsed by joyful noises from France Télévisions in recent years. Roxie's released a second album, 13+5, this year.

Chained to the rhythm - Katy Perry ft Skip Marley

In 2010, Katy Perry made the "Teenage Dream" album. It captured the hope and cautious optimism of the era, and - with a little download discounting - tied "Bad"'s mark of five Billboard number one singles. "Firework" is a golden retriever hit, big and loyal and stupid; "ET" is the most bizarre Billboard number one, being a tale about screwing an alien. Both were seriously considered for this list.

Instead, I pick a song from seven years later, when cautious optimism had been crushed by tiny tiny hands. Chiding her audience for being "happily numb" and "tone deaf", Katy warns of what happens when we "dance to the distortion". There's a woozy Caribbean beat, and a rap from Skip Marley - one of Bob's grandsons.

It was co-written by Katy, Skip, Sia, and producer Max Martin - and it's really well crafted. Note how the emphasis is in the wrong places, "chained TO the rhyTHM", we subliminally pick up that something's wrong.

It's a political song, with plausible deniability - it's an artistic turn of phrase, not the people here she's singing about. Honest. Lest we forget, Katy started out singing Christian pop songs. She knows the tricks used by evangelicals and the religious lot, and uses those tricks against enemies of humanity.

The album "Witness" came and went in summer 2017, and I'd completely forgotten about 2020's "Smile".

I still feel the same way about this now and it’s still a bop. 🎶

The vibes of this whole song and its message, especially the music video with the retrofuture theme, Raygun Gothic with dystopian undertones, like a warning, similar to Fallout in the Pre-War era.

Commentary on the “American Dream” or even…the MAGA movement…and encouraging to fight back against wrong doings instead of being complacent. Our utopia is false, an illusion. Nothing is ever enough and people will just want more. The greed of the powerful is more important than the people.

The song is also ironic because it is such a bop that people probably do ignore the deeper meaning or don’t find it meaningful at all. Dance to the distortion. I’m sure there are various opinions on Katy Perry’s privilege and her flaws. In any case it’s a strong statement about her political views and beliefs.

This song makes me think of the Prewar Era in Fallout. Mostly because of the 50s aesthetics but also the message in the song…
